Vertex is seeking a talented individual to join our Chemical Development group in Cambridge, MA. A team of highly productive, results-oriented, out-of-the-box thinking individuals, the Vertex Chemical Development team is responsible for bridging the gap between new pharmaceutical discoveries and commercial products. By applying fundamental chemistry and chemical engineering principles to new products, processes, and development technologies, this multidisciplinary scientific team works to bring basic medical discoveries to patients and physicians through the design of new syntheses, process optimization and the development of chemical processes for the manufacture of API The ideal candidate for this Sr Scientist position will have an impressive level of experimental productivity and an extensive record of independent and team accomplishments
They will be responsible for identifying and solving technical problems through laboratory experimentation and enabling the delivery of compound in support of early toxicology and technical transfer
This role may also be involved in the development of new chemistry to deliver compounds at the expected development phase purity
Key Responsibilities: - Design and perform synthetic organic experiments efficiently, independently and appropriate for the stage of development (pre-clinical through phase III) - Develop novel and creative solutions to overcome synthetic and manufacturing obstacles and provide process chemistry technical recommendations - Make conceptual contributions to development activities and scientific strategies as well as employ new principles and concepts from other fields to promote new progress in synthesis - Assist in the setting of new experimental direction through the generation of effective synthesis and manufacturing goal supporting hypotheses - Demonstrate the initiative and ability to identify where scientific creativity and insights can impact the overall process development timeline - Draft, review and submit regulatory documents, scientific reports, patents or other published documents - Draft technology transfer packages and work with contract research organizations - Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and SOPs - Multitask to effectively manage multiple activities and projects - May supervise and/or motivate other process chemistry staff in their day to day experiments
