Job Summary: This individual will be a member of the Product Engineering organization, on the Internet Systems Engineering team, and will primarily focus on providing project management support for our High Speed Internet related work
This person is responsible for supporting and assisting the technical solution owner via planning, interpreting, and organizing the execution efforts on Internet-related projects. Such support will take place through all phases of a project, from product conception to testing, deployment, and ongoing platform management. Such work also includes regular resource planning, scope planning, and budgeting activities required to set and meet goals, track progress, and set and meet financial targets This individual will prepare detailed work breakdown structures (WBS) and leverage the assigned project team to ensure successful completion of project within committed time frame
A project is defined as an undertaking that encompasses a set of tasks or activities supporting an established business objective, and has a definable start and end point
A project could be a stand alone or discrete set of deliverables or could be a contributing component to a larger program comprised of several projects
This person will monitor and report on all activities associated with a specific project, and work in partnership with the technical solution owner to successfully complete the project
The Engineering Project Manager must demonstrate the ability to identify and understand the critical paths of a given project, and to identify all work dependencies
This person should be able to provide project management support for several simultaneous challenging projects, and should be able to understand and explain how such projects fit strategically into the overall company roadmap and strategic business initiatives
This individual shall also maintain a transparent, consistent, and timely line of communication with the company’s Enterprise Program Management Office (EPMO), providing status reporting, risk assessment and dependency synchronization information
Although no direct reporting relationship to the EPMO exists, project managers will be evaluated in part on the effectiveness of their interactions with EPMO
Major Duties • Primary focus is on execution, as such is engaged when the project has been added to the Plan of Record and has been assigned to the project manager by the technical solution owner
• Assists in the preparation of, and leads as needed, the drafting of budgets, vendor Statements of Work, and resources plans
• Creates detailed project plans, with all tasks, dependencies, and timelines identified, and keeps those project plans continuously updated
• Advises the technical solution owner of upcoming critical path ideas, dependency problems, and other items in need of attention in order to deliver a project successfully
• Escalates issues and concerns to immediate manager, and other stakeholders (as appropriate) in a timely manner
• Ensures scope, schedule, and budget data are communicated to stakeholders, as they may evolve throughout a project
• Inputs and tracks detailed project tasks, risks, status, and schedules in standard enterprise project management tools (i
e
Clarity) in a consistent and timely manner
• Reports relevant status to managers and key stakeholders in a timely and consistent manner
• Implements established processes to reduce risks and exposure in all areas of the project • Ensures administration activities emphasize efficiency and quality
• Establishes and maintains schedules, drives activities, identifies risks and dependencies and develops mitigation strategies, works with internal teams and external partners
• Meets with program manager and solution owner on a regular basis
• Occasional travel, on an as-needed basis
Measures of Success • Effectively coordinates groups of technical and non-technical resources to deliver project work in a timely and cost-effective manner
• Effectively builds relationships, develops consensus among key stakeholders, and influences behavior
• Contextually adapts behavior and methodologies to the people and issues involved in particular projects to ensure maximum productivity
• Demonstrates an ability to motivate and lead others
• Works projects tasks in parallel where possible, avoiding serial thinking or work, anticipates problems proactively, and adapts to and manages change well
• Develops strong working knowledge of the people, processes, and technologies involved in delivering work in their project area
• Demonstrates a high level of commitment to projects, even during difficult or uncertain times
• Works to resolve ambiguity and remove roadblocks to keep the project moving forward
• Demonstrates critical thinking to analyze and resolve issues, and to develop strategies to mitigate risks
